100% P&T Veterans Can Get Their Federal Student Loans Completely Discharged
If you're rated 100% Permanent and Total, you may qualify to have your federal student loans completely wiped out - no payments, no taxes, no catch. Most veterans who qualify never apply.
If you have a 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) VA disability rating, you can have your federal student loans entirely discharged. It's called a Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge, and it applies to Direct Loans, FFEL Program loans, Perkins Loans, and Parent PLUS loans. Despite being available for years, many eligible veterans have never applied.
Who Qualifies
You qualify if the VA has determined you are 100% disabled due to a service-connected condition that is permanent (not subject to future re-evaluations). Confirm your P&T status on your VA benefits summary letter - look for the phrase "permanent and total" or "not subject to future examinations."
Log in to VA.gov and download your benefits summary letter. Look for "permanent and total" - that's your confirmation.
What Gets Discharged
TPD discharge covers federal student loans, including Direct Loans, FFEL loans, Perkins Loans, Parent PLUS loans, and Direct Consolidation Loans. Private student loans are not covered.
How to Apply
Many P&T veterans receive automatic discharge through VA-Department of Education data matching. If that hasn't happened, apply manually at DisabilityDischarge.com with your VA benefits summary letter. Your loans are placed in forbearance while processed, and the remaining balance is discharged once approved.
The Tax Situation Has Changed - For the Better
Federal student loan discharges are not treated as taxable income through the end of 2025 under the American Rescue Plan Act. Check current rules before applying, but the trend has been strongly in veterans' favor.
What About the Three-Year Monitoring Period?
The Department of Education eliminated the three-year monitoring period and income monitoring requirement. Once your loans are discharged, they stay discharged.
What If You Already Made Payments You Didn't Have To?
If you made payments on loans eligible for discharge, you may be able to get refunds on payments made after becoming eligible. Contact the discharge servicer or your loan servicer to inquire.
Don't Wait for Automatic Discharge
If you're P&T and still have federal student loans, apply directly at DisabilityDischarge.com. Data mismatches between VA and Education Department records can prevent automatic discharge, so don't wait for the system to find you.
